‘Crossroads’ immersive play confronts foster care realities

What if you were a child placed into the foster care system against your will? That question sits at the center of Crossroads: The Journey of Rebecoming, a two-night immersive work created by Cobbled Streets in collaboration with Emancipation Theater Company and Better Together Productions. Directed by Jeff Campbell and staged inside Sports Castle, the production places audiences inside that scenario.

When Art Becomes the Message

Foster care is a system designed to provide safety, but for many young people, it also means movement, uncertainty, and relationships that don’t always have the chance to endure. Children may move multiple times, carry their belongings from place to place, and navigate decisions about their lives that are often made without them in the room. It’s a reality that can be difficult to fully understand from the outside. That is what Crossroads: The Journey of Rebecoming sets out to explore.

This play about foster care brings audiences into the performance

“I'm looking forward to making people as uncomfortable as possible with this immersive experience,” said Vincent Clouse. Clouse is one of the actors in “Crossroads: A Journey of Rebecoming,” a new immersive play about foster care coming to the Sports Castle — the former sporting goods store in Denver — at the end of the month. The play follows the life of Jayden Carter, a 15-year-old in the foster care system who has been placed with multiple different families.

"We have a professional cast, and they're really going to show people not just seeing the experience of the foster care system, but actually feeling that emotion that happens for these kids," said Lara Smedley, Chief Executive Officer of Better Together Production, a Denver-based event and video production company.

A Denver theater production brings “cold and indifferent” foster care system to the stage

On a basic level, the production is the “story of why Cobbled Streets exists, and it is a role play of their theory of change,” said Campbell, founder of Denver’s Emancipation Theater Company. But the story is much deeper, told in a way that doesn’t place blame or criminalize the behavior of any character, even the biological father, but explores the anguish from every perspective.
